Which College Can You Get with Your JEE Rank?

Important factors that decide the admission process

• Rank band: If one comes in the top 1000-2000 ranks, there are possibilities of getting into the premier NITs/IIITs/IITs (JoSAA). Ranks 2000-10,000 can get admission in good NITs/IIITs and government colleges; even if one gets ranks beyond this, it would help secure admission in excellent government or private colleges with placement.

• Branch preferences: There is huge demand in Computer Science, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering branches and Core branches can be secured with a moderate rank, but CS/EC needs high ranks.

• State & Category Quotas: State and category quotas affect closing ranks of some institutes and some institutes are more open to state and category quota seats.

• Counselling strategy: Early and informed participation in JoSAA/CSAB rounds ensures better seats; be prepared with backup branches and institutes.

Steps that will help you to optimize your outcome

Know your rank band and plan accordingly: make a list of rank vs college-wise NIT, IIIT and GFTI colleges in your rank band; also private colleges of repute.

• Set safe and aspiration targets: set at least one safe target where you are comfortably above the closing ranks; and one aspiration target which you can actually hope to get.

• Flexibility of branch: if CS is what you want, then look for colleges where CS is available at reasonable closing ranks; else ECE/ME/EE branches can increase your chances.

• For counseling: collect your documents, know the process, and be updated about the round-wise seat allotment dates.

Required percentile for good NITs?

For Computer Science and Engineering in the most competitive NITs, the required percentile is quite high, around 99.7 to 99.9+ in the General category. For Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, or Civil engineering branches, the required percentile will be lower.

Students who have obtained a percentile of about 99.0 to 99.5 can still apply to various reputed NITs and IIITs by being flexible with the branch, the NIT/IIIT location, and the counselling round. The range of 95 to 99 percentile may help in getting into newer NITs, some selected IIITs, GFTIs, and state institutions.

What about the IITs?
